So now that everyone knows the Mrs. and I are expecting our first child, I've got a request. We've decided that rather than buy one of those CD's that plays popular tunes sung by someone other than the original artist that are easy to listen to for babies -- we'd like to create our own. Essentially: a lullabye mix tape. Of course, it won't be an actual tape, rather a playlist on my iPod.
So I'm looking for songs. To give you an idea of the type of artist and song you would expect to find on this playlist: Jack Johnson, Billy Joel, James Taylor. Sadly, there won't be any Pearl Jam, CCR, Wilco and the like. It's all got to be music that's easy on the ears, positive lyrics and something the wife and I could listen to over and over again without becoming sick of it (as is the case with children, they love repetition).
Hit me with your best shot. Fire away. I'll let you know the final list.

Alright...I'll need specific songs by suggested artists. And no, metallica...not so much. My baby's mama doesn't like Metallica (although she did successfuly watch RockStar, she couldn't stand Neusted(sp?)).
I like Paul Simon, Norah and Tori -- but I'll need exact songs, such artists have such a wide repetoire it'd take forever to whittle it down.
Also, if you can think of a CCR song that'd work, let me know. I'd love some CCR on the mix(note: I once used Down on the Corner in a video featuring a dad reading a bedtime story to his kid).

Since when are you listening to Nickel Creek? I really like Sweet Afton...one of the best songs ever. Wonderful imagery. Does this mean I'm getting old, that we like the same music?

I know you want specifics, but sorry, I don't have time. Here are a few suggestions I haven't seen yet: Chicago, Eric Clapton, Beatles, U2, Phil Collins, Counting Crows (at least the Amy Grant "Parking Lot" song), John Mayer, Marvin Gaye, Elton John, The Police, Sting. May I also suggest jazz or classical pieces? Generally speaking these will be a little more sedate and less offensive than, say, Nirvana.
Also, may I suggest doing a search for greatest songs of all time, I'm sure you'll find plenty of lists with great ideas.

For those of you wondering why I wouldn't put Mozart or Bach or Rachmaninov (although, that one's self-explanatory, don't want the kid to go crazy), because we'll get that on another CD. I wanted good rock and roll tunes. That goes for jazz too. Also, Counting Crows didn't cover Amy Grant. Amy Grant covered Joni Mitchell. And it's not Parking Lot, it's Yellow Taxi. C'mon!
But Oasis was a good suggestion. I hadn't thought of that.

How could I forget, the Foo Fighters are coming out with some stuff that is "easy on the ears." I know you like them!
